I recently bought a used motorhome that I’m planning to use for weekend getaways with the family, and I’m in the process of upgrading the house battery system because the existing setup is old and barely holds a charge anymore. I’ve decided to go with a 200AH deep-cycle battery to give us enough capacity for lights, the water pump, and running the fridge for a couple of days without needing to plug in or run the generator. I’m leaning towards AGM technology because I’ve heard they’re safer for indoor use since they don’t off-gas like flooded batteries, and they’re supposed to handle deep discharges better without sulfating as quickly. The thing that’s worrying me is that I’m not entirely sure if my existing charger/converter is compatible with AGM batteries, because I’ve read that they require a specific charging profile with different voltage limits compared to flooded batteries. I’ve heard that if you use the wrong charging voltage, you can either undercharge the battery which shortens its life, or overcharge it which can cause damage and even be dangerous. I’ve been trying to find information about the charger that’s installed in my RV, but the label is faded and I can’t make out the model number, so I’m not sure what to do. I’m also wondering if I should just replace the charger at the same time to be safe, but that’s another significant expense and I’m trying to keep this project within budget. I work in Business Bay and I’ve seen a few places around that specialise in battery systems for vehicles and boats, so I’m thinking of taking the RV to one of them to get a proper assessment. A friend of mine who’s into overlanding mentioned a place that does State-of-the-Art 200AH Battery Service Business Bay and said they actually test your charging system before installing a new battery to make sure everything is compatible, which sounds exactly like what I need because I definitely don’t want to damage a brand new battery by using the wrong charger. Has anyone here upgraded their RV or boat to an AGM battery and found that their existing charger worked fine, or did you have to replace the charger as well? I’d really appreciate some advice from people who’ve been through this because I don’t want to make a costly mistake.
